ShiftDrop

Free · Open source · Works offline

Hold Shift. Drag a file. Drop it on a slice.

A file converter that lives where your files already are. Pictures, video, audio, PDFs and archives. Nothing ever leaves your device.

How it works

  1. 1Start dragging any file, from anywhere.
  2. 2Hold Shift and a round menu opens at your cursor.
  3. 3Drop on a slice. The result lands next to the original.
  4. 4Keep dragging the result straight into an email or chat.

Make it fit

Say what it's for,
not which settings it needs.

holiday-photo.jpg4.8 MB
  • Under 1 MB
  • Under 500 KB
  • Under 100 KB

Slices like WhatsApp, Email and Under 100 KB find the best quality that still fits. An example; real sizes depend on the photo.

And it keeps going

Small things that save an afternoon.

01

Form photos

The exact pixels and KB an exam or job form asks for. Frame it yourself, then get a JPEG inside the limits. Limits stay editable, because forms change them.

02

History and undo

Originals are never touched. Change your mind on a Mac or Windows PC and the result goes to the Trash, where you can still get it back.

03

Crop, trim, merge

See the real frames while trimming a video. Merge, split, rotate and compress PDFs. Turn a PDF into an editable Word file.

04

Locked files

Open password-protected PDFs and ZIPs, remove a PDF's password, or lock a ZIP with one. Passwords are never stored.

05

Whole folders

Drop a folder of up to 200 files. A damaged file gets its own error, and the rest still finish.

English and हिन्दी

The app follows your device's language, down to the reason a file couldn't be converted.

The app window showing holiday-photo.jpg and the round menu with slices for PNG, WhatsApp, WebP, Email, GIF, Form photo, TIFF and More.

No Shift-drag on your device? The same menu works in the window.

What it converts

One menu. Most of what you have.

Pictures
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO and HEIC, to JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, ICO or PDF.
Video and audio
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, M4A, WAV and Opus. Fewer outputs on Android.
PDF
To JPG, PNG or Word. Merge, split, rotate, compress.
Archives
ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7z and RAR, to ZIP or TAR.GZ, or the files inside.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded, because there's nowhere to upload it to. No account. No ads. No tracking.

  • Android can't reach a network

The app doesn't ask for the permission, so Android itself stops it. Our builds fail if that ever changes.

  • The web app can't either

Its page carries a security policy that lets it connect only to itself.

  • This page loads nothing else

No fonts, scripts or counters from other companies. Open your browser's network tab and look.

  • All the code is public

Read the privacy policy, or the source.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. No paid version, no ads, no account. The code is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0.

Why does my computer warn me about it?

Macs and Windows PCs warn about apps that haven't paid for or been granted a signing certificate, and this one doesn't have one yet. The steps above get past it, and the checksums let you confirm you have the real file.

Does it work with no internet?

Yes. The apps never need it, and the web app works offline once it has been opened once.

How big can a file be?

Very large videos work, as they're read piece by piece. Pictures, PDFs and archives work in memory, up to 1 GB across a job.

What doesn't it do yet?

PDF to Word keeps text and headings, but not yet pictures on text pages, tables or exact layout, and scans can't be edited. Locked 7z and RAR files and RARs in several parts can't be opened. Passwords can be added to archives, but not to PDFs.

Will a form accept my photo?

It will have the size the form asks for, but forms can refuse a photo for other reasons, and their rules change. Always check your form's own notice. The app only crops and scales.
